Lung Transplantation
What is Lung Transplantation?
- A lung transplant is considered for patients with end-stage pulmonary disease or end-stage pulmonary vascular disease.
- ABO blood group & body size compatibility of the donor and recipient are required.
- The first successful lung transplant in Hong Kong was performed at the Grantham Hospital in 1995.
The criteria for Lung Donor

Deceased lung donor:
- brain death donor aged below 65
- meet the general criteria for organ donation
- no lung disease
- normal lung function
- non-smoker is the most ideal donor( minimum requirement for smoking donor: smoking for less than 1 pack per day and less than 20 years)
- Hepatitis carrier is not considered for lung donation
